Created DVD much much smaller than original MKV file

I am certain this has been asked before, but not sure if an answer has been given that allows a solution.

I Created a DVD which is much much smaller than original MKV file, which is 15GB....the resultant DVD ISO image was 3.5GB.....I set it to DVD9 with FULL quality.....any ideas ..? I can’t believe that 11.5GB of the MKV was padding and not movie material.

Would love to know what I can d to rectify this thanks

Hard to say, but simply knowing that DVD9 holds max 8.5Gb, your original file is in FullHD or better quality.

That’s what I thought....I set to FULL quality ( assume that’s better than broadcast.....Two pass....

Even tried don’t re-encode if compatible file used bit mad no difference then tried forcing it by setting target to 7GB made no difference....

Am I using the highest settings possible ?

How do I get the creation log that was asked for

In menu there is "open log file" and "open log folder".

Anyway; your original is at least FullHD (1920x1080) and you are converting to DVD (720x576PAL or 720x480NTSC) so your actual amount of pixels is being reduced to roughly a quarter of original.
That would mean a bit less than 4Gb in full DVD.
So your end result sounds ok.

Interesting point, I was making the ‘wrong’ Assumption that the DVD would be Full HD, which of course it isn’t. Don’t suppose the quality is affected if it’s single or dual layer ?

To get Full HD would I need Blu-ray ?

Totally believe what you told me, but doesn’t it confuse matter when adverts appear ‘windershare’ being one of them, which state HD video t a DVD, one even claims 1080p to a dvd......confuses everyone

You got it!

Some programs advertize "HD" when they really are DVD. Some are just bogus, some use the confusing descriptions of standards:

• HDTV
  720p 1280×720 progressive scan: 923,600 pixels (~0.92 MP) per frame
  1080i 1920×1080 interlaced: 1,036,800 pixels (~1.04 MP) per field or 2,073,600 pixels (~2.07 MP) per frame
  1080p 1920×1080 progressive scan: not a broadcast standard for ATSC 1.0
  Some countries also use a non-standard CEA resolution, such as 1440×1080i: 777,600 pixels (~0.78 MP) per field or 1,555,200 pixels (~1.56 MP) per frame

Out of real broadcast signals the best is 720p - because 1080i is interlaced, so it can be bad in some movies but good in some.
