Conversion Failed
Hi,
Have been using ConvertxtoDVD for ages without any failures, but just got a TV series (10 episodes) in mkv format (1080p) and mp4 (720p).
I was trying to convert 3 episodes, 3 episodes, 2 episodes, 2 episodes for each disc (each episode is about 55 minutes), and have done this many times before.
Halfway through converting the 3 mkv episodes, it failed. Tried the 3 mp4 episodes - failed (total runtime 166 minutes).
Tried converting 2 episodes - no problem, converted fine.
Is there a DVD runtime time limit now? I thought that the runtime for the DVD was irrelevant, you just lost some picture quality.
Anything I can change in settings to allow the conversion (just so I get 4 discs not have to do 5 discs)?
Thanks
Ian

Re: Conversion Failed
There is no change on time limit. Check those files, one might have problems.

Re: Conversion Failed
I think the files are okay - I 'coded' episodes 1, 2, 3 (failed), then did 1, 2 and 3, 4 (no problem).

Re: Conversion Failed
It's so strange - just tried to code episodes 5, 6, 7 - failed again.
Did 5, 6 then 7, 8 - success.
Aaaarrrggghhh.

Re: Conversion Failed
You could also try some test conversions. Convert one file at a time and make sure the files aren't the problem. If a file fails to convert on its own, it and/or others are the problem. If each file converts on its own without error, then try converting 2 files. If they succeed, add a third. Keeping adding until you get a failure. When you get a failure, remove that file and try conversion again. Then, repeat again by adding that file. If it's repeatable, then the problem appears to be when that problematic file is queued up with other files.
It should be rare that a file succeeds in converting on its own and fails when queued with others.
What has me worried is you did some test processing and succeeded and then tried the same processing that failed. That sounds to me like some sort of hardware access error. Either a problem accessing the source files on the hardware where they're located or a problem with RAM or the processor.

Re: Conversion Failed
Hi & thanks for your replies.
It's weird - 2 files at a time - no problem - 3 files? Fail.
I tried it with 3 other files (all Netflix TV episodes) and they failed too, even though the first time I coded them, it worked - I've got a new download of ConvertXtoDVD & it still failed.

Re: Conversion Failed
In the meantime, what I would try is take these 3 files that failed to convert in a queue and convert them to a different file type format with a different codec with something like what I use, AVIDeMux. Then, try processing these 3 new converted files together in a queue and see if they still fail. What I generally tend to do when conversions fail is try to convert the source files to a different file format and codec and see if that helps.

Re: Conversion Failed
dbminster thank you.
Got avdemux & converted 3 files (that'd didn't code as a set of 3 before) to mp4 (it didn't like converting to avi for some reason.
ConvertXtoDVD converted all 3 files to DVD format fine.
I still can't understand why it suddenly decided to come up with the fail, when it's worked flawlessly before!
Thanks again - guess if I've got more than 2 files to put onto DVD, I'll have to go through avidemux every time!
Cheers

Re: Conversion Failed
Well, I can't figure out precisely why it fails in groups of 3 and not individually, but the culprit is most likely the codec used in the original files. CXD doesn't play nice with all codecs out there, so sometimes conversion with something like AVIDeMux fixes the problem.
Why AVIDeMux probably didn't like AVI I can only guess, but it probably had something to do with the chosen codec not being compliant with the AVI format. AVI is an extremely older format and probably isn't compatible with newer codecs. I always choose MP4 over the default of MKV because MKV files take longer to load in AVIDeMux over MP4.
Glad you got it to work, regardless!

Re: Conversion Failed
Big problem currently is all the new codecs and different formats;
AVI, MP4 and MKV are all containers that can contain different streams with different encoding.
All these containers have rules on what can be in them to keep standard.
Sadly many groups that are releasing files are using non-standard (usually new) encoding and that causes small problems while playing those files but huge problems when re-encoding.

Re: Conversion Failed
Hi again
Avidemux seems to be working fine ... BUT:
I've got another TV series with (I assume) hardcoded subtitles (no separate srt file) - is there a way to make sure that avidemux "sees" the subtitles, because after I have run the mkv files through avidemux, I can't see the subtitles, which is strange if they are all part of the one mkv file!
Anything I can do?
Cheers
Ian

Re: Conversion Failed
If they're hardcoded subtitles, they're "burned" in. Meaning they're part of the video. They can't be turned off because, technically, they're embedded in the video.
If you do any editing to a file in AVIDeMux and it has subtitles, AVIDeMux will not save the subtitles because it cannot edit subtitle streams to match the edit made to the video. Did you do any editing to the MKV in AVIDeMux? If you didn't, I thought, last time I checked, if you're just doing a direct conversion from one file format to another, it saves the subtitles. Unless you're saving as AVI, which may not support subtitles? I don't know. I know MP4 support subtitles.

Without more details there can be no definite answer.captainchaosx2 wrote:I've got another TV series with (I assume) hardcoded subtitles (no separate srt file)
You need to find out what kind of subtitles are those, and of course what type of video is in that file.
If those subtitles are NOT in converted file then they are not hardcoded.
But still; this is ConvertXtoDVD forum. Not AviDeMux.
