Subtitle in MKV

Post by pippocalo »

I want give some information, as detailed as I can, about experience (my and of my friends) in problems related to subtitle. (excuse me for my poor english)

We did some tests at the home of a couple of my friends with 2 software able to create MKV from bluray:

1 your MKV to bluray converter 1.3.0.2
2 DVDfab 8.0.5.0

and with 3 players (2 sw 1 Hw)

1 Media player classic Home cinema 64bit 1.5.2.3456
2 VLC 1.1.5
3 WD TV live fw 1.6.15 (the latest)

The platform is a PC with Intel core I7 920 chipset X58 software windows 7 64 SP1

I did use CARS 1 as bluray ISO to test

1- test with DVD fab

DVDFAB is used to make an MKV in re.muxing profile. It generate one video file (with no compression) and two file for subtitle a file "idx" and a file "sub" - I did used toolnix platform (MKVMerge GUI) for muxing in only one MKV file.
If you give again this file to MKVmerge It sees subtitle like "S-VOBSUB subtitke" and is able to extract this subtitle track.
The subtitles of MKV muxed work OK with all 3 players. No problems at all.
For you info MediaInfo 0.7.50 gives this info about subtitle:
- format VOBSUB
- Codec ID: S_VOBSUB
- mixing : zlib

2 - Test with your sofware

Your software generates only one MKV file already mixed (i suppose) with subtitles. I did used both CUDA and H264 profiles with fixed custom output dimension of 10 Gb mantaining 2 audio and 6 subtitles.
If you give this file to MKVmerge It sees subtitle tracks like "Tags for track ID" and is not able to extract this subtitle track.

A. Media player is not able to show subtitles. Only using option i was able to show only the first english subtitle with very very large font. No way to show other languages.
B . VLC shows all the language but has the problem of overlapping (sometimes not always) two lines of subtitles
C. WDTV shows (sometimes like flashing) only garbage in all the screen with strange caracters
For you info MediaInfo 0.7.50 gives this info about subtitle:
- format VOBSUB
- Codec ID: S_VOBSUB
not present the information about mixing

I hope these informations will help you to improve this nice software.

bye
