Different downloading methods in VSO Downloader

Post by Claire »

Depending on the site VSO Downloader works different ways to capture/download/record the streaming contents.

Visually the methods look like this:
different download methods.jpg
Download: The start and end time of the streaming content is known making this the best and easiest media to download. You may be able to pause and resume downloads (but not all servers support these functions). Media detected this way is displayed as a dark green color in interface.

Recording: The start of the streaming content is known but not the end. So the recording could last for days until you stop the recording or until the server stops sending content. You can stop playing the streaming content and the recording will continue but VSO Downloader will not know when to stop. If there is a timeout, the download will start again from the beginning as it is not possible to "resume" where it left off. Media detected this way is displayed as light green color in interface.

Live recording: Both the start and the end of the streaming content is not known. If you stop or pause the playing content this will interrupt the recording/download of the content so it is important to not stop or pause this type of streaming media/content for a successful download. Media detected this way is displayed as light green color in interface.

what is the difference between 'recording' and 'live streaming'? When you instruct VSO downloader to start catching a video, it is a the start time, what is the importance of whether if it's starting at 00:00 or 00:05 or 01:30 ?(just an example) Don't they employ the same algorithm or techniques to catch the video?

are the three different downloading methods determined by how the file is like on the server side and VSO decides a method?
Or they could be chosen by users for the method they want in the setting??

Recording is used when file can not be downloaded directly and it requires to be streamed at normal playback speed. File is usually from start to end and length is known.
Live recording can be any length, it can be recorded at any point and total length is not known. (like some big events, streaming can continue for days)
