DVB-S2 Subtitles

Post by menbed »

Hi
We have been looking to render a satellite tv broadcast DVB-S2 of 1920x1080i HD Meg2 25 frame 4.2.0 16x9 with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio & multi closed subtitle tracks, to Blu Ray.
All can be carried out fine with this software, apart from DVB-S2 closed subtitles.
Subtitles are abit of a unknown to most people.
There are 3 main categories.
Open = as part of the picture(Called Burnt In)
Closed = Used to be called Closed Captions, still are in USA, or HoH (Hard of Hearing) these are embebbed in tv signal, and are Character code based Teletext.(Characters etc. are generated in TV or Video decoder)
Closed DVB-S2 , these are Converted (Rendered) from text by broadcaster, to Tiff or BMP graphics, all the data and characters are sent by the broadcaster,as a sep data track sometimes called HD subtitles.
We need to convert these to .Sup or .Srt data tracks, with valid time code, to add this to the Blu Ray rendering process.

Cedric informs this is his"To Do List" will check this progress with interest.

Hi
We have managed to render a Blu Ray with DVB-S2 closed subtitle, which we are still working on, the subtitles switch on and off fine.
We did it by stripping off a subtitle track with OCR software and made a .srt file which we added back and checked in preview mode, we saw the subtitles being decoded, then rendered as normal.

This is the first time we have been any near producing a Blu Ray disc with DVB-S2 subtitles.
