Average Quality using MP4 preset (H264) + Broken Qual Factor

Post by cribber »

I converted an episode of a DVD to the preset MP4 (H264+AAC) and found that it looks quite pixelated during a lot of fast moving scenes, disappointing. I tried adding 10 % to the Quality Factor and the resulting file came out as the exact same filesize and bitrate. Are the presets broken (because the quality wasn't that great to be honest) ?

Using 1.6.0.6
ConvertXtoVideo Ultimate 1_mainlog.log
(7.1 KiB) Downloaded 516 times
My conversion also looked a bit pixelated around text. Handrake CRF 21 looks better and is a smaller filesize.

Another thing that I have noticed is that when I converted several episodes (42 minutes each), they all came out at just over 400mb each. If I convert the same episodes with Handbrake then the file sizes are very different due to there being various amounts of fast moving scenes each episode. VSO seems to give a set bitrate for the running time and all end up just over 400mb regardless of how many fast moving scenes there are, which is why it looks pixelated in these scenes. Is this another bug ?

To get a similar result as Handbrake use a custom profile and select h264 rate control tab and select rate control method as Constant Quality Constant RF.
Then let us know your results.
*You cannot select your output size.

I think i'll just wait for VSO to release a 64-Bit version. At the moment it's really slow. It takes 16 minutes to convert a 42 minute DVD episode, on Handbrake (64-Bit) it takes 6 minutes (and looks better). Thanks anyway.

P.S.
Did you confirm that the Quality Factor doesn't do anything (as shown in my log file) ?

why do you compare with Handbrake?

You can only compare if you create a custom profile with our software otherwise the settings in a default profile are not the same or compareable to handbrake result

Yeah, it was more of a benchmark. Handbrake is free and can convert the same file nearly 3 times as fast using better quality settings. Hopefully VSO 64-bit can match the speed when it's finally released.

Did you created your own custom profile by setting CRF as rate control method in ConvertXtoVideo?
Or, did you do a test with Handbrake by selecting "Avg bitrate" in video/Quality section?

Like Claire said, you need to use same encoding method to compare encoding results...

My original post was to report that adding 10% Quality Factor on your program didn't make any difference (the bitrate and file size were exactly the same). I only commented that Handbrake (64 bit) could convert the same file nearly 3 times as fast using CRF. Your programming took 16 minutes per episode (using a VSO profile or custom CRF profile) compared to 6 minutes using Handbrake. This is probably due to the 64 bit version. I'll just look forward to the VSO 64 bit version in the near future hopefully.

I just tried myself
and with vso profile got an otuput size of mp4 (h264+ aac) 258 mb
Constant quality (Constant RF) 11% and 536 mb

so I don't think they are brokent or if they were they are fixed in latest beta
cuda encoding on

Hi Clair,

I am also battling to understand this……
Unfortunately I am also comparing the default config of vso to Handbreak which I understand is not right…
But how does one make sure of the file size with ought changing the output size ??

I really want to use vso rather than Handbreak as I have payed for it!
But Handbreak is “doing” exactly what I want at the quality and file size I want….

Hello,

Are you comparing exactly same projects in Handbrake and CxToVideo?
Do you use CUDA encoding in Handbrake?
When you use Constant RF mode, you CAN'T set a target size (in neither program).

Hi,

Yes i am comparing exactly the same projects in Handbreak and CxToVideo.

Am i correct in saying that all i need to do to adjust the output file size is adjust the slider? (Same as Handbreak)

The slider is only used when encoding using target bitrate (the default mode)
If you create your own profile with constant RF, like I said the target size can't be set.

When you change the Handbrake slider position, you change the Rate factor like you do in custom profile editor.

Where did you find the CUDA option in Handbrake?

No there is no CUDA option in Handbreak (from what i can see).

I was just using the RF slider in Handbreak to adjust the file size to around 700MB for me
And it just so happened that the quality at that file size is still great for me.

I have not been using CxToVideo for the last 2 years because i could not accomplish this.
I just happened to now read a post on VSO comparing CxToVideo to Handbreak and see that I can now achieve better quality at
small file sizes.

Thanks guys!

Hello,

What you mean by "Web Streaming"?
Are you talking about output profile compatibility for web streaming?

Sorry Cedric yes thats what i mean!

In Handbreak there was an option for Web Optomization.

Does CxToVideo have this feature also, or is this automatically done?

Hello,

Did you tried ConvertXtoVideo?
There's some web streaming specific output profiles...
