Best Format

What is a good format to convert to if I want to video video on a standard dvd? If I use Nero or ConvertXtoDVD can I use .AVI?
If you want to use standard DVD on normal stand-alone player then only option is DVD compliant mpg-stream.
ConvertXtoDVD makes this very well and is easy to use.
