Output to AVCHD

When converting an AVI to AVCHD, the conversion takes 8 hours and produces a huge file size output. Much bigger than I am used to seeing for AVCHD. Any comments please.
AVCHD can be burned to BR disc. Total size can be 25-50Gb easily if source is good.
