Possible Aspect Ratio Issue

Setup
Video Converter 1.1.0.30, W7 x64, 16 GB Ram, GTX 760 (4GB), i7-2600K, target is a 50GB Blu Ray disc

Usage
I used VC to convert a 1280x720 1:2.40 ratio movie to a 480p movie.. I'm testing putting multiple movies on a blu ray disc for use in a car / plane scenario etc. The resultant MTS image size was correct @ 720x480 but the image within that frame seem squashed horizontally and media info says ratio is 3:2. I would have expected it to be letter-boxed within the frame.

Attached before and after images as well as log and shots of the media info.

Maybe I'm wrong... but when I try the disc in a player even if I manually override the aspect ratio and set it to 16:9 it still looks a bit squashed.

Reminds of the old anamorphic format; maybe that was the intention and I need to find the right setting on the player to compensate...

It seems that when converting to 720x480 conversion is not going correctly;
DVD standard allows only anamorphic widescreen so conversion has to be done to anamorphic.
If it is not, then problems like this can occur.

VSO needs to check this more.

Maybe VSO did i correctly I just don't know..

I was expecting letter boxing but then they'd know the specification better then me.. might be that anamorphic is correct (and best solution for DVDs and old skool widescreen TVs). Maybe I have to find the correct setting on the blu ray player in the car or maybe the cars screens are an odd aspect ratio and they need to do the letter boxing themselves....

If you used automatic settings then it should be correct, but if you manually changed AR then it is a different issue.

Thanks!

I used automatic because the input files have different ratios so I wanted the software to do the calcs... I've tried doing one file and selecting letterbox too but performed the same. Its possible this is correct because it seems the blu-ray have these 480/576 modes borrowed from DVD where it does say WS can be anamorphic, it might be that the resultant aspect ratio reported by the file (3:2) is wrong and this should just be 4:3, maybe the player is reading the 3:2 and trying to do that.

Did a test render last night with a full disc of titles in different aspect ratios.

The aspect ratio for each resultant file looks correct now on the non-widescreen 480P and 576p modes!

Haven't burnt a disc yet I just played the files but I think thats done it.

Thank you!
