AVCHD 1080p vs Blu-ray 1080p

What is the difference between converting a 1080p MKV file to AVCHD 1080p or Blu-ray 1080p?

Are there quality differences? If so, are they noticable.

Which takes up more space?

Also is it noticeable if you convert from a 720p MKV source file to a AVCHD/Blu-ray 1080p compared to a 1080p MKV source file?

There are two main differences between AVCHD & Blu-Ray:

• 1. AVCHD can be stored and played from a thumbdrive, a DVD or a Blu-Ray disc, Blu-Ray can only be stored and played from a Blu-Ray.
  2. AVCHD does not allow java code inside.

There is no quality difference betwenn the two of them and size difference is calculated in ko, so negligeable.

The last question is a tricky one.
The short answer is, it depends.
The long answer is it depends both on the source and the resizer used, and that even if the difference is noticeable it doesnt 'mean that is better or worse.

Example:
If we have a noise source in 720p, some resize filters will remove part of the noise while resizing to 1080p, which can be good if the noise was an error or bad if the noise was an intended part of the source.

On a side note, I decided to use a 1080p MKV source file and convert it to Blu-ray, is it possible to add menus like in ConvertXtoDVD 5?

In theory yes, just go to settings and in "Bluray/AVCHD output " select a menu template.
But at the moment some templates won't work, you should be safe using image wall.

I am trying to convert a video to AVCHD, then burn it to Dual Layer DVD for playing. Is that possible, or do I have to burn Blue-ray and AVCHD to Blu-Ray? When I try to burn to dual layer DVD the write failed both tries. Apologies if this is a dumb question, but it looks like the DVD is big enough to hold the file?

Your DVD media is low quality, that is most likely the reason for failing burns.
CMC MAG is one of the worst ones.

There is a significant difference in audio between avchd and blu-ray. AVCHD is limited to ac3 multi channel whereas blu-ray can have ac3 or dts in multi channel and HD. I hope that future version of the video converter softeware allows for these higher definition audio tracks in both ac3 and dts.
