I am using VSO Video Converter to convert some 1080i files to 1080p and the quality is excellent with much smaller files, thank you. It gives much better quality than Handbrake (with no video jitter).

The original subtitles are white text, but VSO Video Converter converts them to white text in a solid black box, and I cannot see how to get rid of the black box. In the Advanced box in the Subtitle Style Editor, Opaque Box is *not* checked. The black box is not visible in the preview.

I have noticed that the Code Page is set to Laotian, and it remains that way even when I change it to UTF-8 in both the advanced box and the Subtitle Track Edition box and save the change.

How do I get plain subtitles without having them in a solid black box?

I think we are aware of this problem but to be sure we are talking about exactly the same case, can you tell me
what profile are you converting to?

If you use a profile where subtitles are embedded (or use the custom profile editor to embed the subtitles rather than have DVD subtitles, where I know this problem exists) this may be a work around- temporary solution until we fix it.

Until you fix the problem, my workaround is to demux the original subtitles using MKVExtract, then use MKVmerge to remove the VSO subtitles and insert the original subtitles. This works fine, but takes time with a large number of files.

Also, is there a way to set the subtitles so the default is off? (Of course, I can do this in MKVmerge after VSO has finished.)

Again, I am very impressed with the quality of the video (set on +50%) - which is the most important consideration.

No, currently there is not, I entered a feature request here for this:
