Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
Hi there.
Very recently (as in the past few days), I've noticed the size of completed downloads from BBC iPlayer being abnormally large.
For example, a certain 45 minute programme usually required 400mb or so. However a download of the same programme today required 1.6gb, 5 times more than the usual amount.
What may be the reason for this and is there any way to return the downloads to the previous, smaller size?

Re: Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
Are you downloading FullHD or even 4k material?
BBC is providing different resolutions, and even DVD resolution produces bigger file than 400MB in 45 minutes.

Re: Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
Hello.
All my downloads are in SD. Yesterday, things appeared to be back to normal as an SD download of a 90 minute long programme required 514mb. However this morning, a 45 minute long programme required 1.03gb for an SD download.

A bit over 1Gb for 45 minutes fits 1080p material.
Check those files and provide more details.
Downloader log is also good thing.

Re: Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
@ MrBlobby what version are you using?
Other users complain 4.3.0.22 isn't working with BBC iPlayer, but is that the version you are using?

Re: Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
I know I'm replying to this thread a few months late but I believe I've now found the cause of my "problem".

According to the above post, VSO Downloader now downloads HD (or whatever the best video quality is) by default, which would explain the large file sizes.
Thanks to everyone who replied anyway.
It's not a big deal but does the latest version (VSO 5) support an option to download in lower quality?

Re: Size of downloads - BBC iPlayer
the overall protocol support has been updated in the V5 but there is no option to select the low quality it will always get the best quality.
