You have laser power calibration fail each time you start the burning:

Burner analyzes the disc before using it to calibrate its power and in your case it fails, so burning is cancelled.
Reasons can be different, most often it is due to incompatibility between burner and disc, damaged (scratches, marks) or poor quality discs or just a dirty burner, as it is supposed in your long file.

So, check if your burner is proper (dust, pieces of paper) and that its lens is clear (you can clean your burner by blowing dry air inside), check also your burner's properties ans supported by your burner types of discs and try to use other discs and other types/brands of discs. Even in the same pack of discs some are worse than others, so different brand and manufacturer can change a lot.

Verbatim with AZO dye.

I never bombed a DVD in decades ….

Agree with you, not the best choice of the disc brand.
We also recommend here Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

Real Verbatim+R DVD5 are indentified as: MCC-004-00

To help problem solve this:

Did you have the issues with your previous dvd burner? Or only with the replacement "newish" burner?

Are they the same brand blank DVDs that you used with previous burner and also with the newish burner?

If you want to keep using the Ritek discs you've invested in and want to put off replacing the drive if possible because of the cost, there may be a free fix, if it's available. Check for a firmware update for your drive. A new firmware update might update the write strategies for Ritek media for your burner and make them "work" with it.


Be aware if you're going to hunt down Verbatim DVD recordable discs, there are a few caveats. While Verbatim MCC's are the best out there, don't buy the Life Series discs you find in brick and mortar stores. Those are made by CMC and they are the worst. Even worse than Ritek. What you want are the DataLife Plus series also sometimes referred to as AZO and you generally only find those online.

thanks for all that...yeah i guess these discs are low end but a great Many of them have been without issues up to now....i opened the deck and used an air blower, blew on it myself, used a cloth for my eyeglasses, used an alcohol tissue for my eyeglasses. It seemed to work once or twice Then stopped. I will experiment with different discs as soon as i can get them. The burner only cost like $25, but i'd hate to give up on it...i can't imagine that the lens being dirty would persist after all my cleaning attempts, but oh well. Maybe it Is the discs, i am remembering that every once in a few they would fail- anyone recomend a good disc cleaner? i used to have an old maxell CD that had a brush on part of it?some guy would start talking about what would happen next, then some music would play, then a loud dial tone...could use another one of those i guess. if they still make em

To test if the burner is faulty, you could try doing your movie on a different computer or if possible swap out the burner with another one.

To test the drive itself, you could make an investment in a USB burner. Then, you can test your discs on that. If you get, say, 3 or 5 good burns on these Riteks on the USB drive, then you can probably say it's the other burner at fault. However, if the discs fail on the USB drive, it could also mean that that USB drive has a write strategy fault in it and may be fixed with a firmware update.
