Insufficient Memory

Hello friends,
The shortage of memory is in me not my PC, perhaps something to do with simply being very old...
I have done this before but now cannot replicate what should be a simple project. I have a single movie file and I want to have an opeing menu screen which says what the movie is about. In the past a click has launched the project from the menu screen which then moves smoothly onto the start of the movie and all plays well; I have a number of DVDs that work well just like this.
Now when I try I have clearly set some settings wrongly even after restoring defaults. Sometimes I get a message saying "Title no 1" or similar with no menu screen (plays OK from there), and sometimes I can have a menu screen but when I click the TV DVD player it shows buttons for Chapter and Play.
My difficulty now is that I have done it so many different ways over the last week that I am totally confused.
Is the solution clear and if it is can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
David
