Still getting this strange error message when try to install or upgrade on a different PC. Followed the problem solving steps from the error message, but no joy yet. This is the only app playing up on this PC which is WIN10 64, i9, RTX3080, SSD C drive, 32GB RAM.

This needs Jacques wisdom :(

To at least get it installed, did you try <Shift>-<Right_Click> and on the 130.exe and run as administrator, seeif thiss at least get it installed ?

Thank you. Yes just tried that. It still installs, but when run gives this error message, and then closes. Very strange

Issue resolved for me by adding this to Windows Security settings. I think this is a bug in the app or windows security as I've never had to do this before

Ohhh this is bizarre…

What an excellent find !

When I test without my Antivirus, MalwareBytes & Defender are all software’s I disable…
Firewall also sometimes …

Just happy you found.

This is something Jacques will be curious to know about !

I will open an official information bug repot on why you had this issue and not other people !

Here is some clarification. ConvertX Do check access to 3 specific folder at startup. Here is the list:

1 - "C:\ProgramData\VSO\ConvertXtoDVD\7\" checked for Read/Write access. It's the folder of the menu templates and language files.

2 - 'C:\ProgramData\vso\vsomsl' checked for Read access. This folder receive the cache for metadata information obtained when parsing file for exact duration

3 - "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Documents\ConvertXtoDVD_Resources\" checked for Read/Write access. This folder is used by the menu editor and the menu renderer

if any of these 3 folder doesn't exist and can't be created, or doesn't have the required access right, then the critical folder access failure dialog do appear. Also the path of the faulty folder access is visible in the log file (in C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\VSO\ConvertXtoDVD\7\Log\ folder).

the probable culprit here is maybe the folder 3, located in user's document folder, a place that is traditionally well protected by any security solution you have, including the pre-installed windows defender. In theory This folder is created by the installer and the right to write it from the app is set during installation. However, installer application is 32 bits (and can't be 64 bits for obvious compatibility reason) therefore may have some kind of hard time setting up read/write rights for 64 bits targets. So it can be some kind of installer issue that I so far was unable to reproduce.

I'll monitor more closely this in the future, and maybe if necessary, move critical folder #3 to %appdata% which is less strict, as this folder doesn't contain anything that is directly exploitable by user, therefore it doesn't need to be in a highly visible place.

Side note: A 4th folder is also checked, it's the target folder for DVD, by default "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Documents\ConvertXToDVD". It must have read/write access and at least 1 GB free. If this folder is not accessible or don't have enough free space, it's just appearing in the log at startup, but when starting conversion it's re-checked and if fail a dialog pops.

EDIT: bug created - https://bugs.vso-software.fr/view.php?id=14505 it's worth an improvement at least to avoid blocking situation
EDIT2: just to find out a bug has already been created so it'll be a duplicate

Thank you. Items 3 and 4 seems to be missing. See image
Also I located the log files, I am not sure how to send them to you if you want them

Have you tried creating a new local user, and install it on that new profile ?
In case something weird on your existing profile (Account) ?
C:\Users\Stephane\Documents\ConvertXtoDVD_Resources
Ohh I didn't know those ended there  :D :D :D
I have that folder :)

Since this users is for ME (User) Only, your current account should have FULL CONTROL on this folder !

Thanks, I added those 2 folders and checked security ok. And turned off the Windows Security setting Exclusions.
But unfortunately, still crashed. So reverted back to the Windows Security setting ON for Exclusions

I will leave it there for now and thank you for following up, much appreciated.

The issue is with the Ransomware protection of Windows, the "Controlled folder access" when turned on will deny **any** software from writing in the "protected folders" which include all the content of the "Documents" folder.

To fix the situation, open Windows Defender, go to Virus & threat protection, to scroll to Ransomware protection, click on Allow an app through Controlled folder access
2025-05-20_12-14-19.png
Next, Click on + Add an allowed app, and select ConvertXtoDVD.exe
2025-05-20_12-24-38.png
Once this is done, Start ConvertXtoDVD and it'll work.

Edited Side note: I can't do it automatically in the installer, however I can detect it, and open Windows Defender to the appropriate page (it's done in Downloader for instance). Might be possible after all to do it automatically in the installer / in the software. To be implemented in the next build.

which is available here:

https://download.vso-software.fr/archiv ... .0.131.exe

So in this build, the installer automatically add ConvertX to the list of applications allowed to write into controlled folders.

ConvertX itself also perform the check on each startup, and if needed give the opportunity either to change of working folder location, or register itself to the list of applications allowed to write in controlled folders.

So in theory it's no longer possible to have a blocking situation caused by write access allowed in folder(s).

Side note: I put the link as is before the entire test suite is done - so don't consider it as a bulletproof build.

Thank you for the information, through this process my knowledge of how Windows operates has improved.

I turned off the Windows Security setting Exclusions and installed the beta 131, it created the security exception and success.

Thank you

Windows 11 (Oracle Virtual Machine)
Build 131 Test in Trial Mode !
I ensure that Windows Defender (Real Time Protection was ON)
I also ensure that the "Ramsonware Protection was ON[/b]"

It installed without a problem.
Opened the application a few times (If I recall) all worked fine.

Suddenly, Oh look for I got !

It mentioned you might need to create a new folder ! ?
I used the selector and click on another folder.
With the selector, I selected the Original Folder, [OK] enabled, and I was back in business !

Will report back if I see other issues with those security settings enabled.

*NO* I have NOT added the \ConvertXtoDVD\7 folder as an exception YES, I want to see if I can manage without it for testing purposes !

UPDATE: Ohh I see it has been created for me already !

Humm I forgot to check after the installation if it was there or it created it AFTER I did the directory selection thing above !!!

Sorry just a question on hardware support for my nvidea 3080, see attached do I need to run the tests to get hardware support? On 32bit version I cannot recall needing to do test to enable this.

Also when save setting the busy screen does not close

Hi,

In the 32 bits version, there was no tests really...

With the 64 bits, you don't really have to test *BUT* it's a good idea to eventually do it sometimes.

Why ?

If no tests are ran & Hardware Acceleration is turned ON, before the conversion starts, it's doing to do small tests to see if there is some available...
Why the conversion may take 3-5-15 seconds before starting.
On the next file, I think it does the tests also, and see which is the next one available.

Running all the test, it tells ConvertXtoDVD what is available and at what speed !
So on your next conversion, it will KNOW that this codec is supported, and between these 2 or 3, the fastest one is #2
So on the 1st file, it will use it instantly ;)
Check for "Hardware" in the logs ;)

On the next file, if it needs the same Codec, it will know there is another one available, and how fast it is, so in this case, it's the #1 that is after than #3 so it will use this one ;)

Hope this is clear  :D :D :D

See picture, this is MY PC !

--> It will tell ConvertXtoDVD what video card to use, what codec are supported, which ones are not etc...

Thank you. I have run test successfully.
When you saved updated settings, did you get the busy screen / hourglass not closing?

Do you mean the big hour glass on the end of tests ?
Then yes, as long as you see the CLOSE button all tests are done.
Those tests a SUPER heavy on the machine, my 2 PCs are real old and even got application crashes specially on the 1st ones...
Lots of flickers :)

Then it should all be good !
