So I have a large screen 1080 TV. By accident I converted a 2160 mkv file. It took 5 ½ hours to convert a 20GB mkv file. The resulting video does not look very good on my TV. So I didn’t watch it, instead I found and converted a 1080p mkv file which looked great, as usual.

So, several questions: 1) Will the new 64bit software produce a better result when working with a 2160 video file, such that I would want to use 2160 files vs 1080 files going forward. 2) Having a 1080 TV mean that I would ‘not’ want to use 2160 files, and 3) would the new 64 bit software convert a 20GB video file in a much more normal time. My desktop PC can convert a large 1080 mkv video file, in 30 – 60 minutes.

I am ZERO expert on video, but here is my opinion.

Since the output is DVD ratio, I assume the 1080p should/ might look as good as the 2160p movies.
But the 2160p has more quality, so “might” look better if deeply analyzed.
And yes the 2160p will take much longer to process, as the size of the video ratio is Double+ than a 1080p
The 64bits will support most if not all possible input files because it uses the latest FFMPEG engine.
The 32bits lacks support for several newer formats ...

Are you using the 64bits right now ? --> v7.5.0.132 is the latest version !

With Hardware Acceleration it should definitely work faster than the 32 bits.
Download the test pack and run ALL tests, let us know if you see a big difference from the 32 bits !

As for the output, I personally use “Full D1” and Letterbox
In theory 1080 and 2160p output should look the same…

I use [x] Encode with high quality (or something like this lol
If quality is something you are looking for, yes if will be much longer but encode using [x] 2 pass.

Lanczos (VSO) filters were suggested to me, as being the best choice years ago, so I always use these ones...

See what settings I personally use...

Using the latest 64 bit, the conversion took half the time than the 32bit. Okay - Good. But the video result was the same in both cases, 'washed out' colors. Maybe its the old garbage in garbage out. I don't know. The washed out video can be seen both on my desktop PC, before conversion, and on my samsung 1080p TV when watching this converted 'video'. Maybe my desktop PC can't handle a 2160p mkv file so that the 'colors' look normal. Don't know.

Since my TV is 'not' a smart TV I have been thinking of buying a new TV - maybe one that can handle 2160p converted video's

I assume you are having colour issues with this specific movie ?

I had a movie with Dolby ATMOS and the colours were awful…

Before conversion I had to go in the image settings, below the movie playback window, play-preview the movie and adjust the colour saturation etc…

Only this movie had issues, probably because of Dolby ATMOS…

I assume the color issue is related to source encoded with Dolby Vision (DOVI). Such video looks greenish, or pinkish when you watch them with most of the regular video players, including VLC.

The accurate color conversion from DOVI to standard colors that can be put to DVD is only through hardware (Vulkan).
It'll be added to either our player and ConvertXtoDVD (also ToHD if one want to produce a Blu-ray with standard color scheme), but it's relatively picky, and need some additions in the settings so it's not considered as a priority given the relative scarcity of DOVI sources. So it might be implemented after the update to 64 bits of ConvertXtoHD.

Just as to show how it'll look, here is a small video from our test. On left side VLC playing a DOVI source, on right side our test app playing it with the accurate color conversion.

As I suspected, garbage in garbage out. I downloaded a different 2160p video and it played just fine. So the good thing, that I have noticed is that the 64bit is much much faster.

While I will wait for the 'somewhat' final version to be released, (to make a full switch on "MY" PC), this beta seems to work just fine.
